In Gran Bretagna
nasce la musica Acid. La house, di provenienza americana (Chicago e Detroit) viene resa
ancora pi� estrema e aliena, annullando sempre di pi� le sue linee melodiche. Fanno
capolino i primi rave e l'ecstasy. Si tratta di una rivoluzione che coinvolge anche lo
stile di vita, il look, il linguaggio: si rilegge il mito hippy della stagione dell'amore,
appaiono le t-shirt con lo smile, i jeans ampi, il look street, le bevande energetiche
alla caffeina. La polizia comincia a perseguitare i partecipanti ai rave |
1989 |
Liam Howlett,
studente di grafica, ex allievo di pianoforte, appassionato di hip hop e campionatori, va
al suo primo rave. Comincia a disegnare flyer (gli inviti per le discoteche) e a fare il
deejay. |
1990 |
Liam conosce Keith
Flint (attivit� precedente: vagabondaggi per l'Europa), Leeroy Thornill (ex elettricista
e ballerino), Maxim Reality (amante del R&B). Insieme formano i Prodigy, cos�
chiamati dalla tastiera Moog Prodigy. |
1991 |
Liam ha 19 anni. Esce
il singolo dei Prodigy "Charly": breakbeat techno e campionamenti da un cartoon
educativo della tv inglese. Trecentomila le copie vendute. I Prodigy vengono accusati
dalla scena rave di essere commerciali. |
1992 |
 I Prodigy rifiutano di remixare i Take
That. Esce il primo album, "Experience" (duecentomila copie vendute).
"Fire" � il primo singolo. Parte il tour inglese, con laser eliografici e
computer animation. Un fiasco: il pubblico rock non � abituato, i raver invece si
annoiano. |
1993 |
Liam si innamora di
Nirvana e Red Hot Chilly Peppers. La band adotta un look punk techno, Keith si taglia e
decolora i capelli. Esce il singolo "One Love": il clip � in heavy rotation su
Mtv. La riedizione del singolo contiene un attacco al Criminal Justice Bill, la legge che
impedisce i rave: "Scordati le leggi, non ci puoi fermare. Rafforzeremo ancora di
pi� la dance, anche se tutti vogliono impedircelo. Questo � il tuo giorno e nessuno pu�
rubartelo. La dance � troppo forte per scomparire." |
1994 |
 Liam 'studia' Deep Purple
e Led Zeppelin, e porta le chitarre nel suo suono. Esce l'album "Music for the Jilted
Generation", techno punk rock trance hip hop, dai bpm rallentati da 150 a 130.
L'album diventa disco d'oro a un solo mese dall'uscita. |
1995 |
La band � headliner
al mitico festival di Glastonbury. E si da al piercing. |
1996 |
Il singolo
"Firestarter" debutta al primo posto delle classifiche inglesi, vende pi� di
mezzo milione di copie. Il clip viene censurato. Gli Smashing Pumpkins eseguono una cover
di "Firestarter" nel loro tour in Inghilterra. |
1997 |
 Esce l'album "The fat of the
land". La band spiega cos� il bizzarro titolo: "Non c'� burro, ma vi chiedo:
preferite avere burro o cannoni? Dobbiamo importare lardo o acciaio? Lasciatemelo dire:
essere pronti ci rende pi� potenti, il burro sicuramente ci rende pi� grassi".
Crispian Mills dei Kula Shaker canta nel pezzo "Narayam", Saffron dei Repubblica
in "Fuel my fire". La canzone "Smack my bitch up" viene attaccata per
il testo, ritenuto offensivo e violento. |
